DBMS > Inroduction > What is Database?

Database: A database is an organized collection of structured information, or data, typically stored electronically in a computer system. In a database, data is seted up in such a way that are easy to access, manage and update.

Databases are used for storing, maintaining and accessing any sort of data collected on people, places or things.

Data within the most common types of databases in operation today is typically modeled in rows and columns in a series of tables to make processing and data querying efficient.

Relational Database: When data is stored in one or more tables (or "relations") of columns and rows, a relational database is a collection of tables those have some sorts or relation.  These relationships are a logical connection between different tables, established on the basis of interaction among these tables.

In a relational database, a data item is called a column or attribute, a record is called a row or tuple, and a file is called a table.
